This moderate grower is another alternative to the fast-growing Cornish Cross. If you run a smaller operation and value less intensive feeding and growing schedules, then this broiler breed is a great choice for you.
A Reliable Red Broiler
This is a popular option for growers that seek a good middle ground. They are not as slow-growing as heritage breeds, nor are they as fast-growing as the
Cornish Cross or
Red Bro Yield. Red Bro chickens have study, well-proportioned bodies and offer excellent meat yield for their size. However, their meat yield is not as high as the Red Bro Yield.
The Red Bro is highly suitable as a free-range or pasture-raised chicken, as they are excellent foragers, cold hardy, and quite docile. They would make a great addition to any farm or homestead.
Before placing your birds on pasture, keep your baby chicks in the brooder space for at least 3-4 weeks. They need to be fully-feathered before they are ready to live outdoors full-time. Consider the local climate conditions and the time of year before putting your chickens on pasture.
Their appearance may vary, but Red Bros typically have dark, reddish-brown feathers with some lighter highlights underneath. Their tail is darker, and could be black in color. They also have yellow beaks, feet, and shanks.
The Red Bro offers a good feed conversion rate. Growers can expect a feed conversion rate of 2.33 to 2.72 between the age 9 to 11 weeks.
With optimal care, this beautiful red broiler chicken can reach a live weight of 6 to 7.3 lbs at the age of 9 to 11 weeks.
