Grey Broiler Chickens for Sale

If you are looking for something different for your farm or homestead, look no further than the Grey Broiler chicken. This farm-to-table bird is hardy, resilient, and ideal to raise in any backyard setup. Also known as Kosher King chickens or Royal Grey broilers, depending on the parent stock and hatchery used.

The Grey Broiler Mix stands out against traditional white broilers. This breed is a cross, so every chicken will present differently, but most have grayish plumage with silvery white and black barred feathers. Occasionally, they may even have some red feathering or highlights mixed in. These broiler chickens have yellow beaks, feet, and shanks.

Grey meat birds are active and curious, making them a good fit for free-range or pastured poultry settings. When allowed to live outdoors, they will naturally forage for bugs and vegetation, which can lead to a more flavorful and nutrient-dense product.

Before putting your birds on pasture, keep your baby chicks in the brooder for at least three to four weeks. They should have some adult feathers growing in before moving outside. Ideally, conditions should be dry and warm, with temperatures closely matching the temperature in their brooder.

Their feed conversion ratio is similar to the Red Bro. Growers can expect 2.32 to 2.71 between 9 to 11 weeks. With optimal care, this attractive bird can reach a live weight of 5.78 to 7 lbs at the age of 9 to 11 weeks.

FAQs About Grey Broiler Meat Birds

What are the benefits of raising a moderate grower as opposed to fast-growing breeds? Slow to moderate growers can be a good place to start for folks that are new to raising meat chickens. The Cornish is the gold standard for meat production, but fast-growing breeds can sometimes experience health issues if not properly managed.

Can I raise my own Grey Broiler chicks at home? As a specialty hybrid, you cannot breed two of these birds together and get the same outcome. Hybrid chickens have desirable attributes for the first generation, but subsequent generations do not inherit genes the same way.

What kind of markets would be interested in this breed? Many of our clients are small farmers or specialty growers that cater to niche markets. Some demographics prefer the taste of alternative broilers, which have more time to develop a rich flavor because of the longer growth period.

Why are there so many different names for breeds that look similar? Many hatcheries use different parent stock to achieve desirable attributes in their broiler chickens. Our strain would be most similar to Kosher King chickens and Royal Grey broilers, but every breed has their own unique genetics.

Does this breed have a good feed conversion rate? It's not as good as the Cornish Cross, but their feed conversion rate is superior to the Jackie chicken.

Can I raise this bird as a dual-purpose breed? No, most meat birds are not suitable for dual-purpose needs, and should not be kept beyond their processing age. If you are seeking a true dual-purpose variety, consider the Delaware Cross for your farm.
