These stunning birds are part of the Runner duck family. With their distinct slate blue plumage and upright posture, they are considered to be one of the most attractive varieties of Runner duck.
A Small, Slate Blue Beauty
Like all Runner ducks, Blue Runners have slender, upright bodies. Their plumage is typically a slate gray to charcoal blue color.
Because of their posture, they have better mobility than other duck breeds and can be easily herded around your property or farm.
Blue Runners are not as prolific at laying as the Khaki Campbell, but you can expect fair egg production between 100-180 eggs per year.
Duck eggs are highly sought after due to their higher fat and protein content. Runner duck eggs are particularly prized in Southeast Asia.
Runners as a whole are great foragers. They will keep your yard free of pests and weeds. Because they are lightweight, they will not damage your garden or vegetation as they roam around looking for additional food.
These birds are primarily used for egg production and ornamental purposes. Their slender bodies are not conducive to making them a good dual-purpose or meat bird.
Runners do not fly and typically do not hatch or raise their own young.
Blue Runner ducks reach a mature weight between 3 to 4 lbs.
