The Silver Appleyard is a large breed of duck, typically used for egg and meat production. Much like the Rouen duck, their meat is said to be quite tender and flavorful. A great dual-purpose bird for any flock.
This is an attractive bird that looks a bit similar to the Welsh Harlequin duck, but with some key differences in coloration and size.
The females typically have a mixture of buff/white coloration with some darker brown, gray, and black feathers throughout. The males have dark green iridescent heads with a mixture of buff/white plumage and chestnut red breasts. This is a large bird with a stocky, well-built physique.
The Silver Appleyard duck was selectively bred in 1930s England to provide ample meat and eggs. They have maintained their position as a top egg layer among larger duck breeds. In optimal conditions, the Silver Appleyard can lay up to 225 eggs per year. They also grow to be quite large, making them a good choice for meat
production.
This bird really does it all; they are hardy, excellent foragers, and they are even calm and friendly enough to keep as pets. This duck breed is highly functional and attractive to boot.
These birds do not fly. They are excellent mothers, so they may go broody.
