While little is known about their origins, Cayuga ducks are thought to be one of the few domesticated duck breeds that started in the United States. The Cayuga duck is quite attractive and versatile.
The Cayuga duck breed has very vibrant feathers with an almost metallic look to them. Their plumage is mostly black with a green iridescent sheen. Males have more green present than the females. Their shanks, feet, and bills are a black or dark grey color.
As they age, Cayugas may develop some white or gray feathers as well. These birds are considered to be medium in size.
Depending on care and feed quality, Cayuga ducks can lay up to 180 eggs per year. They are hardy and reliable, so they will lay consistently throughout the year. Previously, this bird was a go-to choice for meat production. Once the White Pekin arrived on the market, this duck breed fell out of favor.
The Cayuga is still suitable as a dual-purpose bird, they are just not as competitive as some other high production egg/meat ducks. Some may keep this breed for ornamental purposes.
Cayugas are relatively calm and friendly, making them a suitable addition to any backyard flock.
These birds do not fly. They usually do not hatch or raise their own young.
