The Buff duck originated in late 1800's England, a cross between multiple breeds. Buff coloration was prized at the time due to the ever-popular Buff Orpington chicken and pride for British army uniforms.
Buff ducks have an attractive fawn to tan coloration. Males and females are mostly identical in color, with males having a slightly darker head. Their shanks and bills range from an orange color to more of a yellowish tan hue. They are considered medium-sized ducks. This bird breeds true.
In optimal conditions, Buff ducks will lay up to 220 eggs per year, making them a dependable choice as layer ducks. In terms of meat production, they are fast-growers that will reach market weight quickly. Buff ducks are ready for processing around 8-10 weeks of age, making this breed the perfect dual-purpose bird.
In addition to their large size, these ducks are great meat birds because they pluck easily and they dress well for easy processing. Some growers say these are easier to process than White Pekin ducks.
Much like the Buff Orpington chicken, these ducks are very friendly and a great option to keep as pets. This is a good breed to start with for beginners.
These birds do not fly. Buff Ducks do occasionally go broody.
