The Black Swedish was developed in the same region of Europe as the Blue Swedish. Due to their calm and docile nature, this is a great starter duck for first timers or hobbyists looking to raise backyard ducks.
Black Swedish ducks look very similar to the Blue Swedish. They have black to very dark blue plumage, as well as some white feathers on their neck and breast.
The main benefit of the Black Swedish over the Blue Swedish is that these birds breed true, so this makes them an attractive choice for growers that want to raise and breed their own ducks.
This duck breed is suitable for egg or meat production. In optimal conditions, Black Swedish ducks will lay up to 180 eggs per year.
Although Black Swedish ducks are slow growers, their bodies are quite broad and robust once they reach maturity, making them a prime choice for meat birds. Their duck meat is considered to be of good quality and taste.
This heritage breed has been popular in the US ever since they were imported in the late 1800’s. Due to their exceptional foraging abilities and their tolerance of cold or hot weather, their popularity hasn’t waned over the years.
This breed is a functional and attractive addition to any backyard flock.
These birds do not fly and typically do not hatch or raise their own young.
